(interview by my employer during the Bike Commute Challenge)
Team: BPA Portland
Round trip: Nine miles
Q: Why do you cycle to work? A: Peer pressure originally. Now because it’s faster than the bus, plus you get some peace and quiet every morning and evening to decompress on the way to and from work – which is my favorite.
Q: Are there any cycling misconceptions? A: You don’t have to be in shape to bike commute. In fact, it’s a great way to get in shape. I lost 20 pounds the first year I was commuting to and from downtown and cancelled my gym membership because of it. You don’t have to be good at it. I had a mom with two kids on her bike pass me going uphill in the beginning. I felt silly but quickly remembered it’s not about anyone else but me.
Q: Do you have any tips for riding? A: If you don’t have a neon jacket, make sure you are wearing a white t-shirt for the ride home. It gets dark earlier in the fall and winter.
Q: Who do you think is going to win the challenge? A: Duh, Portland. Not that I don’t love my Vancouver peeps, but the location doesn’t seem as easy to get to by bike as headquarters.
