A Call to Men

Below is a more than amazing TED Talk on the socialization of boys by Tony Porter, founder of A Call to Men.  The other day i was talking to someone about how boys are often forgotten as we focus on working to uplift girls…and we forget that boys also must be nurtured, that we are responsible for their actions, the way they look at the world, the way we treat them differently or the same – and how this impacts the treatment of women.  It’s as if boys are raised to think rather than feel, while girls are raised to feel rather than think – and we feel the pressures when we cross those invisible lines.  It makes me think of the Madonna song, What it Feels Like for a Girl, and how it relates back to the upbringing of boys, and the many internal struggles of men who grew up in the ways Tony describes.

Girls can wear jeans – And cut their hair short – Wear shirts and boots – ‘Cause it’s OK to be a boy – But for a boy to look like a girl is degrading – ‘Cause you think that being a girl is degrading

Watch this…and share your thoughts on the subject with me…
