“We want you to visit our State of Excitement often. Come again and again. But for heaven’s sake, don’t move here to live. Or if you do have to move in to live, don’t tell any of your neighbors where you are going.“ ~ former Oregon Gov Tom McCall

i am a native oregonian who’s watched the influx of californians into my state, wanting the ‘greener’, ‘cooler’ portland.  so much, i witness a perfect example of how people do this.

“oh i love portland, it’s so ME”

“portland is so cool, everyone bikes here and cares about the environment”.

then they move here with their cars, and pick places to live 45 minutes from where they work so they can drive, drive, drive everywhere.  and then bitch about the traffic.

add to the population, add to the pollution?  it ain’t right.

“oh i love portland, it’s so SAFE up here” “portland has so many artsy and unique people here”

then they avoid living in the city because it’s not safe, they say, and move out to the suburbs where there is no art, there is no diversity, there is no culture.
