I was introduced to The Stranglers at 16 when my future ex-husband and his best friend used to talk about them INCESSANTLY. While they didn’t make a huge impact on me at the time beyond teenage giggling at the lyrics to Peaches, over the decades they got under my skin, with Golden Brown and it’s haunting, goosebump-inspiring melody and lyrics, both peaceful and melancholy all at the same time. How could it not be when you’d married that fella, one who battled that demon then traded golden brown in the veins to golden brown in a shotglass.
Dave Greenfield was the guy who made this song so powerful, and he will be missed. Another loss in this pandemic that has claimed the lives of so many in our world, another reason we must take this seriously. RIP.
