Lovely weekend! The sun was out, the fog lifted, we continued on more house projects, I did a bit of cleanup in the garden, and managed to get out and be social a bit as well…
Our weekend started off with the 4th Annual MLK Breakfast. It was a sold out crowd with incredible speakers and a delicious breakfast from the good folks at PoShines De La Soul Cafe. It was also a treat to see friends, meet new folks, and share the whole day with my partner.
My friend Deena Pierott hosted the breakfast and got us all in the spirit of the day with her energy, emotion and presentation. If you don’t know about Deena, she runs iUrban Teen, all about getting young people of color interested in tech, and was recognized this year as a Champion of Change by the White House, along with being part of Ebony Magazine’s Power 100 for 2013. She’s on a roll!
The ultimate surprise was special guest Congressman John Lewis, a legend in the civil rights movement, close friend to Dr. King and a man still making a difference for our country today. He inspired us all tremendously in his talk, and we all felt really blessed to have had the chance to see and hear him.
After enjoying breakfast with friends in the neighborhood, we headed downtown on this sunny winter’s day and after lunch at the food carts, happened upon this group of WWU singers. My favorite had to be their rendition of “One Fine Day” while my sweetie held my hand 🙂
A quick selfie before heading into our movie 🙂
A truly Oscar-worthy performance by Julia Roberts, along with the entire cast of August: Osage County. But let me tell you this: be prepared. We cracked open a bottle of wine after this we were so emotionally exhausted – it definitely hits a nerve or two! (photo credit)
